Queendom Come in Invermere

Hello Invermere! Queendom Come and the rest of the Frean Chronicles series is now sitting pretty on the shelves of your gorgeous library, be sure to say hi next time you’re in town!

Podcast

Welcome to my Author Nook, a monthly podcast I created where I chat with authors about their literary brain children, and bibliophiles about their niche areas of obsession. Find it on Spotify here, and Youtube here.

As you know, I release episodes once a month with no set date so the best way to stay in the loop is to follow and subscribe on either Youtube or Spotify. Also, if you want to read ahead, next month we’re chatting with Kim Wilkins, the author of a series that helped define my teenage self.

May

The Gina Champion Mysteries – specifically Bloodlace by Kim Wilkins

This month I have the privilege to sit with an old co-worker and chat about the story with the greatest twist in literary history.

Picture taken by yours truly on her way to work cerca March 2023

So pull up a comfy seat, pour a cuppa tea, and settle in as we chat about The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, the dual nature within us all, and why this story still strikes a cord even hundreds of years later.

We ended up chatting much longer than my episode length allowed so if you’re hungry for more, have a look at the follow up episode where you will learn about who created the cover of John Kay Press’s edition and how, the real-life figures who inspired Stevenson’s character of Jekyll and Hyde, some (in)famous Edinburgh ghost/zombie stories, and updates of what’s coming next with John Kay Press!

Ash Caton is an Edinburgh-based writer and host of the literary podcast and YouTube channel, Ear Read This.

John Kay Press and John Kay Bookshop can be found on their Instagram, here.

Captain’s Log

Spring has Sprung

in Vancouver at least…

Was so fortunate to see the blooming daffodils, tulips, and stunning cherry blossoms on a recent trip to Vancouver.

And don’t worry, I said hi to our girl in the wetsuit ❤

Fun fact about Girl in Wetsuit, is she is an homage to the statue in Copenhagen of The Little Mermaid which I was fortunate enough to visit in 2022.

Spooky Season Highlights

October is the best month (and not just because it’s my birth month). Something about being cozy and the promise of spooky fun is so magical. The range of the season is incredible, and I’ve been fortunate enough to chat with authors about a range of their cozy/spooky/autumnal novels. So regardless of whether you’re interested in Disney-level spook, or Stephen King ah!‘s, I’m sure I’ve got an episode that will tickle your fancy. Here are a few highlights for those who love…

Horoscope killers
Evil fairies
Murder mysteries
Supernatural bullies
Ghosties: evil and benign
Death buildings
When monster hunters kiss
Eldritch horrors
Ghosts and grief

And if you’re wanting a listen for your commute, each episode is also available on my Spotify channel Author Nook with Jordan H. Bartlett.

Captain’s Log

Birthday in Barbados

Gotta say, it’s pretty magical getting older in paradise. Up here in Canada, the weather is getting colder and colder so having one last romp in the sun was a dream. We went swimming, cave exploring, rum tasting, garden wandering, fish fry dancing, and so much more! I definitely came away with a new appreciation for the colour blue. Check out her range:
